Heal the leaky gut

Leaky gut syndrome is a condition in which the intestinal lining is more porous than normal, which allows large particles such as undigested protein, fat, waste products, bacteria, fungi, parasites and other toxins that are normally not absorbed, to leak into the bloodstream. The immune system makes antibodies against these molecules when it recognizes them as foreign substances rather than foods. This can be verified by urine tests and microscopic examination of the intestinal wall or the blood. Leaky gut is almost always associated with autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, lupus, MS, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, hives, diabetes and a few others. Healing autoimmune disease thus depends on healing the gut.

The cause of leaky gut, inflammation, comes from many sources such as antibiotics that lead to the overgrowth of the wrong bowel flora and their toxins, parasites and their toxins, direct irritants such as caffeine and alcohol, certain chemicals, rancid fats, (by definition mainly polyunsaturates) high-carbohydrate diets, and the chronic use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatories. Inflammation also damages the protective coating of certain antibodies that are normally present in a healthy gut, resulting in reduced resistance to opportunistic infections by viruses, bacteria, parasites and candida. They may find an easy route to invade the bloodstream and colonize almost any body tissue or organ. If present in large enough amounts, associated toxins can overwhelm the liver's ability to detoxify, causing confusion, memory loss, general brain fog and even facial swelling when the individual is exposed to a toxin that (s)he had no previous adverse reactions to.

Inflammation causes edema, bloating, gas and cramps (often labelled IBS); vitamin and mineral deficiencies occur because the leaky inflammed gut and scar tissue won't absorb nutrients properly. We see for example some muscle pain and spasms due to the reduced absorption of magnesium, low stomach acid, hair loss and baldness from impaired zinc absorption, elevated blood cholesterol and emerging osteoarthritis from low copper absorption and so on, and bone mineralisation problems can develop as calcium, boron, silicon and manganese levels are reduced.

The cause of leaky gut, inflammation, comes from many sources such as antibiotics, which lead to the overgrowth of the pathognic bowel flora and their toxins, parasites and their toxins, direct irritants such as caffeine and alcohol, certain chemicals, rancid fats, (by definition mainly polyunsaturates) high-carbohydrate diets, and the chronic use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatories.

The cure is unremarkable than in that it involves removing the offensive dietary components and reducing the associated infections that may be propagating the irritation, and healing the gut lining so the cells start to grow close enough together again to stop the passage of unwanted particles into the lymph and bloodstream. It means dietary change to one that does not cause irritation or allergic reactions. Nix the sugar, flour, gluten (especially wheat, barley, oats and rye), high fat foods, polyunsaturated and hydrogenated oils, caffeine, and alcohol. Depending on the infections one could reduce them with colloidal silver, oregano oil, Moducare, olive leaf extract, garlic, echinacea, grapefruit seed extract, and monolaurin or coconut oil; for parasites, a parasite kit. Improve your bowel flora with lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacteria and feed these beneficial organisms with inulin (second-best is FOS - fructooligosaccharides) so they can do their job of maintaining the correct pH and absorption. Take digestive enzymes with every meal at least until your bowel heals. Eating more fiber won't hurt, and generally practicing a good nutritional program including supplementing with vitamin B and antioxidants will help.

Of the antioxidants, undenatured whey is stellar for healing the gut and elevating the body's most powerful healing agent and detoxifier, glutathione. I know people who got rid of IBS, myalgia and fatigue all at once in a few months with a program of a cold-processed whey isolate that increases cellular glutathione. As stated above, the root cause may have been leaky gut, but in fact practically all diseases and infections relate to low glutathione anyway and most can resolve on a protocol of whey, selenium and inulin, often referred to as the Crow Protocol. Glutathione is the chief source of energy for, and maintains the structural integrity of, the cells of the intestinal lining, and it supports their quick regeneration, similarly to its action in every cell. A bonus is that glutamine is a component of glutathione you're trying to increase, and it's a gut healer on its own. Take 1-2 cold-processed whey shakes with selenium, 200 mcg/day, especially if you're not up to perfect.

To restore the bowel lining really quickly, and it's tissue that should respond particularly well because it grows fast anyway, you can increase your natural growth hormone levels as longevity specialists do, with an amino acid blend like SomaLife gHP. Youthful HGH releases triggered in this way will quickly rehabilitate the bowel, and also the skin, bones and muscle tissue, all of the organs and the cartilage of the joints and give your whole beat-up body a second wind in just several months. SomaLife's amino acids also build collagen, and a bonus is that it contains glutamine in its purest form.

The research on growth factors was sparked by the Isidori study, which used equal parts of 1.2g arginine pyroglutamate and l-lysine to trigger HGH release, so with that you could blend your own. L-arginine or arginine ketoglutarate compete with l-lysine for uptake so the pyroglutamate version is important for this effect of inducing HGH release. Since most companies are using the wrong formula your kitchen guess will be better and cheaper. I take about 1.5 grams of each by eyeballing it.

Most of those supplements are so important that they are already in the Medicine Bag shortlist; worthy of note here is the "cure for heart disease" patented by Dr. Matthias Rath and Linus Pauling; it's only those same amino acids and vitamin C, that time for heart disease. I don't know how they did it without Serranol or Serrapeptase and I'll cover the enzymes later.
