Natural antibiotics as good as anything

A study conducted at Cornell University found that spices such as garlic, oil of oregano, onion, and allspice kill every bacterium tested, even anthrax. (Billing J, Sherman PW, Antimicrobial functions of spices, Quarterly Review Biology 73: March, 1998.) These and other natural products even kill drug-resistant strains. The news comes at a welcome time due to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria attributed to overprescribing these drugs.

Garlic exhibits strong activity against bacteria, as well as against fungi (yeast) and viruses. Garlic eradicates vancomycin and ampicillin-resistant enterococci bacteria, a germ that is a growing cause of mortality in hospitals. (Jonkers D et al, Antibacterial effect of garlic and omeprazole on Helicobacter pylori, Antimicrobial Agents & Chemotherapy 43: 3045-54, 1999.) (Unal R, et al, Novel quantitative assays for estimating the antimicrobial activity of fresh garlic juice, J Food Protection 64:189-94, 2001.) In one report, infectious disease specialists concede that garlic may be effective in the treatment of middle ear infection given that antibiotic drugs are failing. (Klein JO, Management of acute otitis media in an era of increasing antibiotic resistance, Int'l J Ped Otorhinology 5: 15-17S, 1999.)

The findings of two studies presented at the American College of Nutrition revealed that oil of oregano is as effective as pharmaceutical antibiotics at killing bacteria. Oil of oregano was recently tested against drug-resistant Staphylococcus bacteria and was found to be equally effective as streptomycin, penicillin and vancomycin. (Preuss HG, Oregano oil may protect against drug-resistant bacteria, Science Daily, October 11, 2001.) One study showed that oregano completely inhibited the growth of 25 germs such as Staphylococcus aureas, Escherichia coli, Yersinia enterocolitica and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
[Journal Food Protection, July 2001] Oregano has been shown to be effective in eradicating intestinal parasites in humans. [Phytotherapy Research, May 2000]. Just one part wild oregano oil in 4000 dilution sterilizes contaminated water. [London Times, May 8, 2001].

Tea tree oil is active against many germs, including streptococci, E. coli, and various fungi, such as Candida. In a study of 30 patients who had infections that were resistant to a common antibiotic, one-third were completely cured by tea tree oil compared to just 13 percent who received conventional treatment. In another rigorous trial of various treatments for herpes cold sores, tea tree oil was as effective as the synthetic drug acyclovir. After just 10 minutes exposure to tea tree oil, there were profound changes in bacterial cells leading to their destruction.

Olive Leaf Extract also kills a broad range of pathogens and it has been found to strengthen the body’s immune system. It prevents such viral diseases as HIV, Epstein-Barr, herpes, and influenza. It alleviates sore throats, chronic sinusitis, skin disease, and pneumonia, and it eliminates symptoms of all types of infections, including yeast, fungal, bacterial, viral, and other parasitic protozoan. Grapefruit Seed extract (Gse) is an extremely effective broad-spectrum antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic compound that has been tested and proven by universities and countless laboratories throughout the world to be at least 10-100 times more effective at killing germs than Colloidal Silver, Iodine, Tea Tree Oil, and Clorox Bleach. Gse has been proven to be totally nontoxic to humans and animals and is very safe and effective for internal and external applications. It is endorsed by WHO (The World Health Organization) and is hailed by FDA researchers and medical people all over the world for it's activity against viruses, bacteria, fungus, and parasites. It has been proven that Gse kills over 800 assorted bacteria and virus strains, 100 fungus strains and a great many parasites that infect humans and animals.

A study in the Philippines carried out by the government's San Lazaro Hospital and pharmaceutical giant United Laboratories since 1989, revealed that coconut chemical lauric acid inhibits, delays and reduces the spread of HIV virus. Coconut oil is about 50% lauric acid, the same antiviral present in mother's milk. I'll elaborate on lauric acid and its
derivative monolaurin in a future column. Coconuts also contain about 6% capric acid which has also demonstrated significant activity against Herpes simplex-2, chlamydia, and HIV-1. Coconut oil in a reduced carb diet instead of polyunsaturated oils will further reduce body fat, reduce cholesterol deposits, and increase your energy levels in addition to affording a measure of protection from infection. The suggested minimum of 25 grams of lauric acid per day amounts to 4 tbsp of coconut oil. Or, one could drink 12 ounces of canned coconut milk and also get about 25 grams of lauric acid.
